Dear Corporate Counselor:
I am a 32 year old woman who recently received my Phd in American studies. I have been a students for all these years with very little relevant work experience.
Now that I am ready for full time employment, I find that creating a resume is a very difficult process and as a result I have been getting few positive responses. What should I do?
Dear Education Queen,
ReplyDeleteYour resume needs to be in a topical format rather than a chronological one. By that I mean that the focus should be on your skill sets as they relate directly to the job you are applying for. Further, your Phd may or may not be of value to a prospective employer so carefully consider its inclusion. Be sure to focus on your education but only if the opportunity presents itself; otherwise, tone it down. For example, you may want to go with you BA only for a particular job or even high shool if need be.
What is most important especially in these times is that you obtain employment even if it is not up to your expectations. Once you are self sufficient you can move forward to obtaining your dream job.
